Such a friendly community

Posted on February 21,2011 by hhaddadmspp

When I first interviewed at MSPP, I was surprised at how welcoming and nice everyone was. After having lived in New York City for a year, such niceness was a shock to me. I couldn’t believe that such a friendly environment could exist year round...

But now that I am a student here, I see that it does. In particular, I am thinking about my first year class. Although MSPP sponsors many “getting to know you” events throughout the year, my class has taken initiative in arranging these events. The first such event happened only one week into the school year when someone from our class invited everyone over to his house for a barbecue. Such openness seemed daring to me, especially only one week into the program. But the timing of the event was perfect, and it seemed that many of my classmates saw the event as a great bonding experience.

Grad school can be FUN?!

Posted on February 13,2011 by hhaddadmspp

Most people do not associate the words FUN and HOMEWORK. And I admit I never did…until I came to MSPP and started my second semester in the clinical psychology PsyD program. So far, one semester in, all the assignments given at MSPP have been great especially because almost all of them have required me to incorporate the clinical experiences I am having at my practicum. Such assignments allow me to use my field placement in order to gain a better understanding of psychological theory, while also helping me grow and improve as a clinician. Despite all the wonderful benefits of these assignments, I would not call them FUN in the traditional sense of the word.

One assignment has changed my opinion on homework assignments being fun. The first assignment in my social psychology class was a creative writing assignment. I couldn’t believe my eyes when I read the description of this assignment on the syllabus. It seemed too good to be true: an assignment that required no research or reading or references! Honestly, at first I was a little freaked out and intimidated by this assignment, as were my classmates. Some of us preferred the idea of having to write a research paper. As I began work on the assignment, though, I really began to have fun. I was able to incorporate some of my outside interests (including Twilgiht) while improving my comfort with the American Psychological Association Publication Manual.

Second Year Practicum Applications

Posted on February 07,2011 by hhaddadmspp

It’s hard to believe that the semester could already be in full swing, but it is, despite all the snow days we have had. So far, the topic of conversation (at least with other first years) has been next year’s practicum sites….

Amazingly, the site search process began in November! While still getting settled at my current placement, I had to begin thinking about what type of site I wanted to apply to for next year. Did I want to work with kids or adults? Did I want to work in a hospital, prison, or outpatient facility? Did I want more experience with individual or group work? So many questions to ask, but eventually the lists were narrowed, and each first year had five sites to which to apply.
