As promised, I thought I would share what my typical week looks like as a first year School Psychology student.
Monday: Wake at 7:30, get ready and leave by 8:30 to drive from Marlborough to MSPP in West Roxbury. Arrive just before 9:30. Statistics class from 9:30-12:30 with a 15-minute break in the middle. Then a 30 minute break to eat, walk around, and talk to classmates. 1:00-3:30 is practicum class where we talk about our experiences in our practicum placements and learn about relevant topics such as ethics and people skills. We usually only get a 5-10 minute break in the middle of this class because it is shorter. After class we get another 30 minute break to eat, walk, and talk. 4:00-7:00 is Instructional Assessment and Intervention. Thankfully, the teacher always brings us bagels so we stay alert at the end of this long day! Afterward, drive home, arriving around 7:45. Have a quick fast meal that my boyfriend has prepared and relax at the computer. Monday nights are usually a blur. One thing is for certain: no homework gets done! Bedtime between 11:30-midnight (same for the rest of the week except Saturday).
Tuesday: Sleep in till 9:30. Do homework or readings for the class that day, alternated with some video game playing if time permits. Leave apartment by 3:00 to get to school by 4:00. Education Children & Adolescents with Special Needs from 4:00-7:00. Drive home, enjoy another quick dinner prepared by boyfriend, and usually we have time to play a game together and/or watch a DVD.
Wednesday: Similar to Tuesday. Homework for that day’s class/video games. Lifespan Development class 4:00-7:00. Drive, quick dinner, hobbies.
Thursday: Wake up at 7:00a.m. Leave apartment by 8:00 and drive to the elementary school for my practicum which is only about a 15 minute drive. Work from 8:30 to 2:00 going to special education meetings, observing in classrooms, reading about disabilities, and taking notes. I will eventually be able to do testing and report writing. Go home and unwind, video games. Make dinner and enjoy NBC prime time shows. More relaxing and bed.
Friday: Starts the same as Thursday with work 8:30-2:00. Friday is more laid back in some ways and more stressful in others. There are no meetings Friday so there is more time during the beginning of the day. Dress and attitudes are usually more casual and there is almost always food to eat. However, Friday is the day I observe kindergarten. My role in the class is much more than just an observer. I actually help out in the reinforcement of good behavior and I am an extra pair of eyes and hands to supervise the children. It is very difficult as I have never done this before and it is often unclear what I should be doing. Hopefully I will feel more comfortable as I learn more about what to do. At the end of the day I am usually very stressed. I go to the grocery store on the way home, and then I relax and play video games. Friday evenings are usually low-key. Sometimes one of my boyfriend’s friends comes over or we go out somewhere close. But we are usually both burnt out by this time and want to just relax with a DVD.
Saturday: This day is usually a self-care day. Sometimes I go visit my family and my best friend back in Southampton. Other times my best friend might come visit me, or one of my boyfriend’s friends wants to hang out with us. Sometimes there is a fair or a festival to go to. There is almost always something fun going on. We tend to stay up much later on this day.
Sunday: This is my marathon homework day. I am a procrastinator and often lack the focus and/or motivation to complete homework during the week. So I often wait till the day before everything is due and get it all done in one shot. This actually seems to work pretty well. I do all my observations, interviews, and testing during my practicum, so all that’s really left is writing things up, and doing any assigned readings or statistics exercises.
When I write it all up, it really seems like I have a lot of free time. But what I didn’t say is that I also sell on Amazon and eBay during a lot of that free time for extra money. And there are often little miscellaneous things that need to get done around the apartment or packages to mail. And the blog! One thing I do very well is filling up my time. But I love it! And I have to say that the program definitely fits my lifestyle very well. As insane as those Marathon Mondays sound, I love being able to kill 3 birds with one stone so that I have more of the rest of the week to relax.
